Embry-Riddle in Arizona Selected for Air Traffic Controller Training Program

Embry-Riddle Prescott Joins FAA’s Enhanced AT-CTI Program: A Boon for Arizona’s Aviation Future

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently announced a pivotal development for Arizona’s aviation landscape: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott campus has been selected as the first institution in Arizona to participate in the Enhanced Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) program. This exciting news not only underscores the university’s commitment to aviation excellence but also marks a significant step in strengthening the nation’s aviation workforce.

Elevating Standards in Aviation Training

Embry-Riddle Prescott joins a select group as only the ninth school in the U.S. authorized to deliver the Enhanced AT-CTI program. This advanced curriculum and training technology were previously exclusive to the FAA’s Air Traffic Controller Academy in Oklahoma City. With this designation, students at Prescott can now access invaluable training that positions them directly into facility training, effectively bypassing portions of the traditional academy process. This streamlined approach promises to enhance the overall efficiency of preparing new air traffic controllers.

Commitment from Leadership

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has articulated the FAA’s commitment to modernizing the recruitment pipeline for air traffic controllers. In his remarks, he noted that “we’re taking aggressive action at the FAA to recruit the best and brightest into our controller workforce by making the training process more efficient than ever.” This initiative signifies the FAA’s intent to bolster its aviation workforce, essential in maintaining safe and orderly skies.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford also emphasized Embry-Riddle’s crucial role in this endeavor. He stated, “The safety of the National Airspace System is our number one priority,” reinforcing that the Enhanced AT-CTI program is a catalyst in cultivating the next generation of air traffic controllers.

Arizona’s Rising Aviation Hub

The announcement reflects Arizona’s growing significance in the aviation sector. Grace Applebe, the executive director of the Arizona Manufacturers Council, highlighted this development, remarking, “The FAA’s decision to bring the Enhanced AT-CTI program to Embry-Riddle Prescott highlights Arizona’s growing reputation as a center for aviation and aerospace excellence.” This recognition not only enhances the state’s profile but also assures companies exploring investments in next-generation technology that Arizona possesses a robust talent pipeline.

Demand for Air Traffic Controllers

In light of the increasing demand for air traffic controllers, the FAA has ramped up its efforts in recruitment and training. During its recent “Supercharge” hiring campaign, the FAA received over 10,000 applications, with more than 8,300 candidates progressing to testing. As of August, more than 600 students were actively undergoing training at the FAA Academy, marking the highest number in the organization’s history. The Enhanced AT-CTI program is specifically designed to expedite this training pipeline, utilizing partnerships like the one with Embry-Riddle. However, students must still complete rigorous testing and meet medical and security standards before advancing to hands-on training at FAA facilities.

A Legacy of Excellence

Embry-Riddle President P. Barry Butler expressed pride in the FAA’s approval of both its Prescott and Daytona Beach campuses for this critical initiative. He noted, “Having both Air Traffic Management programs at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach and Prescott campuses approved for this critical FAA initiative demonstrates the high level of training and education Embry-Riddle provides.” This endorsement from the FAA reaffirms the university’s commitment to producing highly skilled, professional graduates prepared to enter the ranks of air traffic controllers.

In the dynamic world of aviation, Embry-Riddle’s inclusion in the Enhanced AT-CTI program signals not just an expansion of training capabilities but also a broader commitment to the safety and efficiency of air travel in the United States. With a strong educational foundation, the future looks bright for Arizona’s role in the aviation industry.
