Full-Circle Moments: A Homecoming in Journalism

A Special Return

Life often presents us with moments that complete a circle, bringing us back to where we started. For me, this month marks one of those moments as I step into my new role as the state government and politics reporter at Wisconsin Watch after an eight-year hiatus from the Badger State. My journey has imparted valuable lessons, and this return feels like homecoming in the truest sense.

Home Matters

As someone who grew up in the Milwaukee area and earned my journalism degree from Marquette University, Wisconsin is deeply embedded in my identity. My educational path, including real-world experiences at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, shaped my career and instilled in me the vital importance of community journalism. It’s noteworthy that NNS is now part of Wisconsin Watch, making my return feel serendipitous.

Broadening My Horizons

After spending time in southwest Florida at the Naples Daily News and then moving to Indiana to work at the Indianapolis Star, I gained a diverse perspective in local government reporting. My four-and-a-half years in Indiana allowed me to cover a variety of issues, from the complexities of Democratic infighting regarding reproductive healthcare to debates surrounding property tax reform and surges in child labor violations. Each experience enriched my understanding of how politics influences daily lives and communities.

A Constant Pull

Even while I was away, Wisconsin remained on my mind. The state often dominated headlines, including this year’s intense Supreme Court race, which set spending records and attracted national attention. The pull to return home was strong, and Wisconsin Watch offered me the opportunity to engage directly with these pivotal stories and the people involved.

Engaging with the Community

I am genuinely excited to dive into reporting that educates fellow Wisconsinites about their government. My goal is to uncover stories within the Capitol, interact with key figures, and demystify the processes that impact people’s lives. Whether it’s analyzing legislation or discussing community needs, I aim to be a bridge between governmental actions and public understanding.

Join the Dialogue

As I embark on this exciting new chapter, I invite you—Wisconsinites—to contribute to the conversation. Your insights, questions, and suggestions are invaluable to my work.
