Golf Business Update: England Golf Reports Record-Breaking Month Amid Ongoing Golf Boom

Record-Breaking Scores Submitted to the World Handicap System

August has turned out to be a landmark month for England Golf, setting a new record for the number of scores submitted to the World Handicap System (WHS). A staggering 1.6 million scores were logged in just one month, eclipsing the previous record set in August 2024 of 1.569 million and even outstripping May’s then-record of 1.597 million. This remarkable achievement highlights a growing enthusiasm for golf in England, showcasing both the sport’s popularity and the effectiveness of the WHS in promoting participation.

Perfect Weather and Its Impact

The summer of 2025 has been notably dry and sunny, which naturally encourages more golfers to hit the course. The ideal weather conditions have contributed significantly to the influx of submissions. Interestingly, 53% of the scores came from competitive play, while the remaining 47% were from general play rounds. This balance between competitive and casual golf underscores the versatility of the game, appealing to a broad range of golfers.

Year-to-Date Submissions on Track for a New Record

As of the end of August, a total of 8.961 million scores have been submitted in 2025. Given that last year’s total was 10.214 million, it appears that this year is on track to surpass that figure well before the year wraps up. This trend points towards a revitalized interest in golf across the country, with players taking full advantage of the improved conditions and accessible playing options.

Growth of iGolf and iPlay Programs

England Golf has also reported significant growth in its initiatives aimed at increasing player participation. The iGolf program, which aims to enhance the golfing experience through digital tools, reached a milestone of over 70,000 subscribers in August alone. In addition, the iPlay program, designed to encourage new players, has welcomed more than 11,000 new users. These programs not only attract new players but also help foster a community around the sport.

Insights from Claire Hodgson

Claire Hodgson, Head of iGolf, expressed her enthusiasm regarding the recent successes. “Clearly it’s been a great summer in terms of the sun shining, and it’s obviously encouraged more and more to get out on the course,” she remarked. This upward trajectory in participation rates indicates that the golfer journey is effectively engaging players. Notably, since the inception of the iGolf program four years ago, over 20,000 users have transitioned to golf club memberships, lending credence to the program’s success.

Championing Inclusion in Golf

Hodgson emphasized the importance of inclusivity in golf, stating, “We will continue to champion our game as one that is inclusive and accessible to all.” The goal is to ensure that every individual feels welcome in the world of golf and recognizes the potential to grow within the sport. This mindset aligns with the broader objectives of England Golf, which is committed to making golf a sport for everyone, regardless of their background or experience.

Embracing the Digital Age

The surge in WHS submissions is also indicative of how golfers are increasingly embracing digital platforms—most notably the MyEG app. This app streamlines the process of score submission and enhances the overall golfing experience, making it easier for players to track their progress and stay engaged with the sport.

The Future of Golf in England

With these promising statistics and initiatives, England Golf looks poised not just to maintain but to further accelerate its growth in the coming months. The combination of superb weather, engaging programs, and a supportive community sets the stage for an exciting future in English golf.
