On September 4th, 2025, the Kenmare Honkers faced off against the Our Redeemer’s Christian School (ORCS) Knights in a highly anticipated match, marking a significant moment for both teams in their new Region 3 alignment. With a storied history of success in volleyball, both teams were eager to demonstrate their capabilities. The Honkers, visiting as under-the-radar competitors, proved themselves formidable, securing a decisive straight-set victory with scores of 31-29, 25-20, and 25-20.
A Battle of Experience and Youth
The coaching matchup between Tim Wallstrum of Kenmare and Kara Nunziato of ORCS was emblematic of the rich tradition both teams carry. Together, they have led their squads to a remarkable 21 state tournaments. Last season, the Honkers featured prominently in the state tournament, finishing fifth, and are looking forward to a repeat performance this year. Early indicators suggest they may just be on the right track following their strong start this season.
The Intensity of the Opening Set
The opening set set the stage for an intense battle. The Knights surged ahead, confidently leading 22-17, propelled by an impressive serving performance that included six aces—three of which came from Kadyn Braun. However, the Honkers exhibited resilience, launching a late 7-1 run to swing the momentum in their favor. The set was characterized by a flurry of lead changes and set points, ultimately culminating in a dramatic finish. Kenmare’s Charlotte Brekhus clinched victory in the opening set with a decisive kill, followed by an ace that sent the Honkers roaring with excitement.
Wallstrum praised his young team’s tenacity, emphasizing their “hustle” over technical perfection. “We have such a young team… but I thought we really hustled hard tonight,” he noted, celebrating his 1,076th career win.
Solid Defense Paves the Way
Kenmare’s defense shone brightly in the subsequent sets. The Honkers effectively contained ORCS’s offense, challenging their hitters and digging out balls that seemed destined for the floor. Defensive specialist Makaya Jensen led the charge with 12 digs, while freshman Kiley Aufforth contributed seven digs. “That comes down to hustle,” Wallstrum said, crediting Jensen’s outstanding performance as a backbone to their defense.
Middle Set Dominance
The second set began with the Knights claiming the first four points. However, Kenmare swiftly regrouped and orchestrated an impressive 8-0 run, regaining control of the match. The set highlighted the prowess of Kenmare’s middle hitters, Taya Aufforth and Trista Kihle, who combined for nine kills. Taya also added two blocks and an ace to her tally, showcasing her versatility on the court.
Interestingly, while Kenmare struggled with serving in the first set, they turned the tide by accumulating seven aces over the final two sets, demonstrating a newfound confidence.
A Strong Finish
In the third set, Kenmare maintained a consistent lead, extending their advantage to seven points at one stage. Despite the Knights attempting a late-game comeback with a 4-0 run to narrow the score to 22-19, the Honkers showed their mettle. Amaya Baptiste’s kill and a series of powerful attacks from Kihle sealed the match, leaving ORCS scrambling to respond.
Kihle concluded the night with a match-high 16 kills, while Taya Aufforth contributed an impressive 11 kills. For the Knights, Brooklyn Roedocker led with 10 kills, supported by Lauren Strom and Noel Pankratz, who contributed nine and six kills, respectively. Grace Olson shined as a setter, recording 25 assists and leading defensively with 21 digs.
Lessons and Future Challenges
Despite the loss, coach Nunziato remained optimistic, noting the learning outcomes and growth opportunities inherent in every setback. “Our confidence was just a little rattled,” she admitted, highlighting the challenges faced by her young team. With the season still young, she’s determined for the squad to regroup and refine their game.
Both teams are set to participate in tournaments over the weekend, with Kenmare competing in the Coal Country Tournament and the Knights aiming for redemption at the Volley in the Valley Tournament. As they both navigate this new chapter in Region 3, anticipation builds for how the remainder of the season will unfold.
